Shame Wood and Woakes, weren't fit from the first test. Gave the attack a real lift when they came in. Useful runs with the bat, from them too. Not sure we would have got more than 3 tests out of Wood though, given his fitness record.
A bonus for England, convicts not having Lyon for much of the series. They missed him more, than we missed Leach.
8 of the England side that played the 5th test are over 32, so batting will need rebuilding in the near future, as well as the bowling.

The five test venues next time around should be: Lords, Oval, Cardiff (so we can go "abroad"), Chelmsford or Trent Bridge (weather permitting) and Valentines Park featuring a new Derek Pringle stand holding 22,000 people.

You know the other thing that really fucks me off.... no trent bridge. Again. The last time this lot played there they got bowled out for 60 before lunch on the first day. A few remain. Fucking Manchester. Shithole with an ugly red media centre. Awful place

Also got to give some credit to Moeen today. Bowled through the pain of a groin strain and got the ball to turn. Can't fault a bloke who plays through pain. Final test, too, so England will need some longer-term cover for Leach (and his spin partner in India).

The dropped catches were a big concern and also a bit of mental fragility,ie the early declaration. Maybe big cracks was stronging it a bit but definitely a few lessons to be learned.

Yes stewie, I was surprised how docile the pitches were, especially at Edgbaston and Headingley. Only thing wrong with the series, apart from the weather and the CHEATING of course.

yeah i saw him in the T20 game there....hard to claim that he was amazingly impressive taking 1 for 32 off 3, but that's that game...and the notable thing was that he is genuinely quick, and looks strong. Wouldn't be at all surprised if he makes the trip to india.

i hear you, victory to salvage a draw does have an emptiness to it to a certain degree. Its now 2015 since we last won the ashes, which means it'll be a decade minimum before we do. Which is, in all reality, not good enough.
Not sure about big cracks... just about being a bit smarter, for me. Should never have been in a position to lose the first test, it shouldn't have ever been in question but we blew both innings - the first with a declaration, the second with ridiculous batting when we could easily have put the game beyond them. We'd (likely) have lost here without the second new ball after 30 overs and it'd be the same conversation having thrown away what should have been an unassailable position on saturday afternoon/evening. Same when LOLyon got injured - the only bowler in their squad capable of holding up an end. As soon as that happened, we should have been grinding them into the dirt. We saw at the back end of the series how quickly they ran out of steam - Cummins, probably the best bowler of his generation has 3 for 274 from 49 overs in the last two games - so we should have done that at Lords, instead playing a shot a ball and getting ourselves 2-0 down.
Small things, minor tweaks, just being a bit street smarter, and we'll be superb.

Griff - yeah, that's not a bad list of bowlers, actually, is it?
You're right about Woakes: he's bowled really well, and consistently, throughout the series. Always had the Aussies under pressure even when they were in.
I just hope that one or two of those names you mentioned come through close to the level that Jimmy and Broad hit for so long. Losing almost 1,300 test wickets is a big blow. But, yeah, I like the look of some of those younger players.
